Dekko Comics Parents/Carers/Staff Event

We are delighted to welcome Dekko Comics' founder and creator, Rossie Stone, to East Lothian on Tuesday 6th February.  Dekko Comics are educational comics that turn school curriculum content (ages 8-12 (P4-S1)) into engaging comic strips, helping pupils to overcome barriers to reading, learning and motivation.  For more information, please see: https://dekkocomics.com/  

This talk and workshop is based on the fundamental technique on which Dekko Comics is built, which comes from Rossie's experience of struggling at school with dyslexia and low self-esteem, and how he overcame it.  This event will introduce the Dekko Technique to parents/carers/staff, hopefully giving an insight into a practical technique which could potentially help your child/young person with their learning.  Rossie has spoken to many organisations about his technique, including Dyslexia Scotland.

Author visit to Preston Lodge School Library

In December Preston Lodge High School welcomed poet and writer Nadine Aisha Jassat to the school library.

Nadine talked about what led her to becoming a writer - wanting to make a positive difference by offering diverse stories. She then read from and talked about her books 'Let Me Tell You This' and 'The Stories Grandma Forgot (And How I Found Them)'.

Nadine challenged students to make and read aloud some Book Spine Poetry - see the photos below of the book spine poetry they created! She also got students to participate in some collaborative poetry writing, asking them to think of a sentence that could help or inspire others or call for change.

The session finished off with a question and answer and book signing.

This was such an inspiring and engaging workshop and students are keen to have Nadine visit again in the New Year.

We have two platforms available with tons of great reads for you, from classic novels to the latest bestsellers!

Bolinda Borrowbox has a range of fiction and non-fiction titles for children, teenagers, young adults as well as adults – so there is something for the whole family!

On CloudLibrary we have content for adults with users getting access to thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks including titles from other libraries signed up to CloudLibrary. This means you get a fantastic choice of fiction and non-fiction titles!

Both platforms have accessibility features that allow everyone to experience the joy of books.  You can change the font size, font style and background and Borrowbox also has a dyslexic font.  You can also listen to eAudiobooks at your own pace by reducing the playback speed.

Pressreader - eNewspapers and eMagazines

Borrow eNewspapers and eMagazines from around the world via Pressreader! There are more than 7000 titles available from over 100 countries including The Guardian, Good Housekeeping, and The Scotsman to name a few.

You can also listen to articles, change the language and increase and change the font for greater accessibility.

eComics and Graphic Novels

There are thousands of digital comics, graphic novels and Manga available to borrow via ComicsPlus. There are titles for all ages - adults, young people and children. Publications available include those by Archie Comics, Iron Circus Comics, Dekko Comics and many more!

Theory Test Pro

Calling all learner drivers, parents of learner drivers or anyone who is due to sit a vehicle theory test!

You can access TheoryTest Pro for FREE as an East Lothian Library member.  Theory Test Pro is a highly realistic online simulation of the UK's driving theory tests for all vehicle categories.   

There are official test questions, hazard perception video simulations, and an online version of the Highway code. 

So, whether it’s a car, motorcycle, passenger carrying vehicle, large goods vehicle this resource can help you prepare for your theory test! 

Transparent Language Online

Learn a new language! Whether you are planning a trip abroad or just want to brush up on that language you studied in school, we’ve got you covered with Transparent Language Online.

There are over 110 languages to choose from plus English (ESL) materials for native speakers of over 30 languages.
KidSpeak™ is also accessible through Transparent Language Online and is a fun, age appropriate online language course for children ages 6 years and above! Available for English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

 If you are looking to learn new skills or brush up on existing ones then Universal Class is the perfect resource for you. With a click of a button you can access over 500 online courses from the comfort of your own home.

Courses are available in a variety of topics from accounting and book-keeping to bread baking and cake decorating!  This is great way if you are looking to pursue new interests and passions or gain valuable skills.

Go Citizen

This is an online study resource for candidates preparing for the 'Life in the UK' test of British Citzenship test. 

Go Citizen has the latest official study materials from the Home Office, hundreds of practice test questions and additional interactive learning resources and teaching aids.

Ancestry

Ancestry has over 4 billion records available to search from historical census, immigration records, parish records and passenger lists making it a great tool to uncover your family history.

Please note: This is the only resource that you are unable to access from home - access is from a library PC or through the library WIFI.

Don't worry you can easily join as an online only member by visiting our library catalogue.
