The John Gray Centre is coming!

The scaffolding is down, the glass atrium is up … and the new heritage centre for East Lothian, based in Haddington, is getting closer to opening day!

The library will be opening on 9th March, the Archive and Local History centre on 23rd March and the Museum later on in the month.

The historic building on Lodge Street has been fully restored and refurbished.
Inside, you will find:

The all-new Haddington library
East Lothian Archive and Local History Service – with reading room and ready access to the curators’ expert knowledge
A modern museum telling some of East Lothian’s most fascinating stories
An elegant gallery for temporary exhibitions
Activities and events in the Star Room. You will also be able to book the Star Room for events held by your group, availability permitting.
Free Wi-fi and 14 public computers
Lots of events and activities for all ages and interests

There will also be a new website for the Centre, where you can find and share entertaining, informative and educational resources, search our catalogues, use the map to explore the region through time and place and get regular updates on events and activities.

Really happy to report a couple of updates to our catalogue. You can now rate books you have read - you just need to log on to your account, find the item and give it a star rating - this then shows in the record when others view it. You can also now view your loan history when you are logged onto your account.

Temporary closure of the Local History Centre

The Local History Centre at Haddington Library is now temporarily closed and we are no longer taking enquiries for a temporary period. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our customers. This is to allow the local history and archives team to work on the archive and local history collections and make preparations for the move to the John Gray Centre, Lodge St, Haddington which will open in March 2012. An exact opening date for the new facility will be announced shortly. We look forward to welcoming you to the new archive and local history centre in 2012 and appreciate your support whilst we make the necessary preparations.

More than 100 writers from Midlothian and East Lothian took part

Writer of the Year for 2011 across East and Midlothian was announced at an awards ceremony at the Brunton Theatre on Monday 31st October. Judges AC Clarke and Tom Bryan were on hand to present the prizes and spoke about why they chose the winning entries.
The awards were sponsored by Kesley’s Bookshop of Haddington with the donation of book tokens as prizes and the overall winner was presented with the fabulous Writer of the Year trophy by glass artist, Alison Kinnaird, from Temple. The overall winner will also receive a master class in creative writing from Tom Murray, Tyne and Esk’s Creative Writing Fellow.
More than 100 entries were received for the competition which is run by Tyne and Esk Writers with the support of East Lothian and Midlothian Libraries.
The overall Writer of the Year Award and first prize in the East Lothian prose category went to Marie MacPherson for Birth. The runner up was Jean Cole for Picture This.
First prize in the East Lothian poetry category went to Ian Murphy for his poem How come, Dad? and the runner up was Cindy Stevens for her poem The Innocent.
First prize in the Midlothian prose category went to Mary Johnston for Getting His Ain Back and runner up was Andrew Broadfoot for Feathers.
First prize in the Midlothian poetry category went to Lesley Kelly for Mrs Campbell Reacts Tae the Falklands War and runner up to Rachel Woolf for The Arithmetic of Passing Time.
Eight writing groups meet regularly across the two local authority areas and are open to anyone with an interest in developing their creative writing. Further information is available through the local library service or from http://www.tyne-esk-writers.com/

East Lothian 1945-2000, Fourth Statistical Account

The production of a seven volume series East Lothian 1945-2000, Fourth Statistical Account, which offers interesting insights into the daily lives of people within the county since World War II, has led to East Lothian Library Services winning the prestigious Alan Ball Local History Award for 2010.

The East Lothian Fourth Statistical Account provides an invaluable resource for students and researchers as well as being of interest to local people.

The first three Statistical Accounts of Scotland were published in the 1790s, 1830s-40s and 1950s respectively and provide a rich and informative history of the parishes of Scotland. East Lothian was one of the first Scottish counties to update the Accounts to 2000, thus providing a history of the county spanning more than 200 years.

The East Lothian Fourth Statistical Account Society was set up in 1998 with an Executive Committee of Stephen Bunyan (Chair), David Moody (Treasurer), and Michael Cox (Hon Secretary). Heritage Lottery funding of £30,000 was granted, to be matched by volunteer hours and input. Editor Sonia Baker was appointed in November 2000 and volunteer researchers and writers were contacted throughout the county. They put in a huge amount of work and produced vast amounts of information that was then edited by Sonia for publication in book form.

The seven volumes deal in depth with the villages and towns and the daily lives of their inhabitants, including the social, political and economic history, geography, environment and people of East Lothian since World War II. They provide a wonderful reference tool for students and researchers as well as general readers.

The Alan Ball awards were instituted in 1985 to encourage local history publishing by local authorities across the UK. Alan Ball was Chief Librarian of the London Borough of Harrow and in his name up to three awards are made each year. There have been very few Scottish winners so East Lothian Libraries' success in the main award is a tremendous achievement.

Young Writers achieve awards

The winners of the Young Writer of the Year across East and Midlothian have been announced. The competition sponsored by The Seabird Centre in North Berwick and organised by Tyne and Esk Writers in conjunction with East and Midlothian Libraries attracted a record number entries this year.

An award ceremony took place recently at the Town House in Haddington, where the winners were presented with their prizes; a £20 book token for the best poetry and poem in two age groups from East Lothian and Midlothian and for the two overall Young Writer of the Year winners a family day out to the Scottish Seabird Centre plus a boat trip on Seabird II sponsored by the Scottish Seabird Centre.

Tom Murray, Creative Writing Fellow for Tyne and Esk Writers and judge of the competition said “These were exceptional stories and poems and a joy for me to read. Testament, if any is needed, of the wealth of creative talent amongst young writers across the two regions. The overall winners amongst the best I've read in a long time.”

A booklet containing all the winning entries was given to the successful participants and copies are being sent to schools and libraries across the two local authority areas.

It’s been great to see some of you taking advantage of our new opening hours and coming in earlier in the morning, staying over lunch and visiting us on Saturday afternoons. Do pop in if you haven’t yet had a chance to take advantage of our new hours.

Sale of Travel Guides

For one month only we will be having a sale of travel guides in the library. These are books which we have withdrawn from our stock as they are now a few years old. Much of the information contained within the guides will still be relevant so we think they’re a great bargain to save you having to buy your own at the airport. The guides will be available from 29th August to the end of September (or sooner if we sell out).

We still have a selection of newer travel guides to borrow and will be replenishing our stock over the next few months so do ask us if you can’t see what you're looking to borrow.

Cameron McNeish Talk - Friday 2nd September 7.30pm - Brunton Hall

Cameron McNeish, wilderness hiker, backpacker, author and broadcaster, will be giving an illustrated talk “Trails and Climbs for Television” at 7.30pm on Friday 2nd September in Brunton Hall in Musselburgh. Through his highly successful BBC2 television programmes, Wilderness Walks, and his long running editorship of TGO (The Great Outdoors) magazine Cameron McNeish has long been recognised as one of Britain’s best known outdoor commentators.

In 2007, Cameron acted as a consultant on Griff Rhys Jones’ highly successful series for BBC1, Mountain, and currently contributes a regular slot, Wild Walks, on the BBC Scotland series, The Adventure Show. A “special” Adventure Show was shown on Boxing Day 2008 and 2009 in which Cameron presented ‘Sutherland - The Empty Lands?’ and ‘The Skye Trail.’ In 2010 he continued the series by presenting ‘The Hebridean Trail.’ It is his work in these areas that his talk will focus on.

New opening hours for East Lothian libraries from 1st August 2011

As part of a move to make East Lothian Council libraries more responsive to the needs of East Lothian residents, Dunbar, North Berwick, Gullane and Musselburgh Libraries will extend their opening hours.

Usage of Dunbar Library has increased dramatically over the last few years and will now open for 36 hours a week (as opposed to the present 32 hours) as they prepare for their move to the new Dunbar Library at Countess Road, due to open in the Spring of 2012. By 2012/13, we hope to be able to open the new library all day on Saturday.

North Berwick Library will be open for an additional 4.5 hours, enabling the library to open at 9.30am instead of 10am during the week. It will also be open all day on Saturday and through lunchtimes all week. It will reduce its evening sessions to two evenings a week and those sessions will now end at 7pm.

Gullane Library is one of our best used smaller libraries and will increase its hours from 18 to 24 to give customers more opportunity to visit the library.

Musselburgh Library will now open for an extra ten hours a week to give 47.5 hours opening a week. We are going to open the library at 9.30am each morning, keep it open throughout the day (rather than closing at lunchtime) and also open on Saturday afternoons. As Musselburgh is the largest library in an urban area, evening opening will remain unchanged and the library will still be open three evenings until 7.30pm.

There will also be changes to the opening times of Wallyford, Tranent, Ormiston, East Linton and Longniddry Libraries. These changes are based on the way that readers in these areas use their local libraries.

The changes in opening hours should not incur any extra costs to the Libraries Service. They will take effect from 1 August 2011.

New DVD Rental Scheme

We are launching a new DVD Rental Scheme from Monday 4th July. Borrowers can rent a new release film for £2.50 for 2 nights, or an older film as well as TV dramas, TV series, documentaries, comedy, travel DVDs for £1.50 for a week’s rental. Juniors can rent older films, TV Series and Dramas for £1.00 for a week. Our new release films are only available at Haddington and Musselburgh libraries for the trial period. Further information can be obtained from all local libraries.

Premium DVDs - Please note these DVDs cannot be reserved and the hire charge is £2.50 for 2 nights. Premium DVDs are currently only available in Haddington and Musselburgh libraries.

Gary was a lapsed golfer, until he acquired his late dad's putter. After studying a crumpled golf map of Scotland, Gary decided to embark on a voyage. His target was to play 18 rounds of golf on 18 Scottish islands in honour of his dad.

East Lothian Bookbug gifting programme celebrates 1st Anniversary

Babies, toddlers and their parents will enjoy a range of nature-themed activities at local libraries. Bookbug in East Lothian today announces details of its 1st anniversary celebrations, which will see hundreds of children taking part in free events across the county, on Thursday 19th May 2011.
The theme of this year’s celebrations will be The Great Outdoors. Babies, toddlers and their parents will gather in libraries across East Lothian to enjoy nature-themed stories, rhymes, songs and games.
Bookbug in East Lothian is part of Scottish Book Trust’s national Early Years Programme, which supports the gifting of 420,000 free books to every baby, toddler, three year old and Primary One in Scotland every year.

The East Lothian programme also runs regular free story, song and rhyme events called Bookbug Sessions, please contact your local library for times or visit our Bookbug page.

Musselburgh free insulation offer – loft and cavity wall insulation FREE!

East Lothian Council and the Energy Saving Scotland Advice Centre have got together to provide free home insulation for homes in Musselburgh. Some people qualify for free insulation already, but most people would normally have to pay. That’s what makes this offer so special – anyone can get free insulation.
Why is cavity wall and loft insulation free for Musselburgh residents?

East Lothian Council secured funding from the Scottish Government so that everyone in Musselburgh can get their insulation installed free. However, the funding is limited and we want to make sure that all residents have the opportunity to take up this scheme before it ends.
